Pachena Bay is located near Bamfield on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. It's known for its deep bay that faces southwest and provides a natural setting for those looking to enjoy the outdoors. There’s a good campground nearby, which makes it a decent spot for surfers who want to explore the surrounding wilderness. Keep in mind, though, that while the bay has its attractions, the surfing opportunities here can be pretty average.
The surf at Pachena Bay is mainly for beginners, with waves breaking over sand. You can expect straight-handers rolling in from the southwest, but they do have some left and right options too. The spot handles swell sizes starting from about 1 ft (0.3 m) and can take swells from the south and west. For the best conditions, you’ll want to hit the water with a northeast wind, and it works well at low, mid, and high tides. Though it's not known for powerful waves, it's a good place to practice and relax on the board.
While Pachena Point has a history of surfing since the '60s, it's off-limits without a boat, so your best bet remains right in the bay itself. Don’t forget that surfing isn’t allowed along the West Coast Trail, so make sure you stay within the designated surfing areas. Enjoy your time out there, just keep your expectations in check!
