Pambula Rivermouth surf guide

Pambula Rivermouth is a surf spot located on the south coast of New South Wales. This area features a unique break created as the river meets the ocean, providing some interesting wave action when the conditions align. While it's known for its righthander, it doesn’t work all that often nowadays, and most surfers are more familiar with the beachbreaks just north of the rocky point which can deliver more consistent waves.

The righthander at Pambula Rivermouth becomes a real beauty mainly during a decent NE swell (that’s from the North-East, by the way) that can hit around 5ft (about 1.5 meters). To see it at its best, the river needs to be running high, which doesn’t happen every day. When it does come together, it can get fast and furious, especially at low tide, so you better be an expert to navigate those barrels without taking a pounding. Best conditions are when the wind is coming from the South-West. However, don’t expect to score a lot here due to its fickleness and reliance on specific conditions.

One thing to keep in mind is the crowd situation at Pambula Rivermouth, which scores about an 8 out of 10 for the hustle and bustle you’ll face on the water. Plus, this spot can be a bit sharky, especially near the rivermouth, so it’s wise to stay aware while you’re enjoying your surf session. If you find the righthander to be less than ideal on any given day, you can always head north to the beachbreaks that are likely to be more reliable.
