Paniki Point is located on the northwestern arm of Halmahera, and it offers a unique surfing experience. This spot features a long, bending wave that can take you almost back to the peak. The environment is pretty relaxed, making it a decent choice for surfers looking for a laid-back session.
The surf here is best with northwestern swells, but it can also handle northeast swells. You can expect wave sizes from 1 ft (0.3 m) up to about 6 ft (1.8 m). The waves break over a live coral reef, mostly providing right-hand rides. This wave is suitable for beginners, especially since it stays fun across low, mid, and high tide. The wind coming from the east helps keep the conditions clean and rideable.
As far as amenities go, the anchorage off the newly built fish cannery is quite safe. If you’re looking for a fresh water rinse after your surf, check out the Kohatola waterfall just across the bay. It’s one of the best spots for a shower after a day in the water.
