Playa Hermosa - Puntarenas surf guide

Playa Hermosa in Puntarenas is a popular surf spot known for its reliable waves and beautiful scenery. Located just a bit north of Dominical, it gets a good amount of swell, especially from the south. The beach has a laid-back vibe and is a great place for surfers looking for a variety of wave conditions. It’s a favorite among the local surf community, making it a lively spot to check out the surf action.

For surfers, Playa Hermosa offers different wave types, primarily breaking on sand. You can catch both left and right waves depending on the swell direction, which is optimal from the west. This spot handles swell sizes starting at around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can handle overhead waves when the conditions are right, particularly on an incoming tide. The north-east winds work best here, and while it tends to be more suitable for advanced surfers, beginners can find decent waves as well. If you’re new to surfing, it might be better to head over to Colonia for a more manageable experience.

You'll notice that the best-action spots are generally towards the northern end of the beach, where the swell really picks up, especially from the south. Further down by Punta Evita, the waves get smaller unless there’s a significant west-northwest swell. So, keep an eye on the conditions and pick your spot accordingly. Playa Hermosa can be fun but requires awareness of the surf size and your skill level to truly enjoy it.
