Ponta Pequena surf guide

Ponta Pequena is a surf spot located almost halfway between Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar. It’s a place that often looks deceivingly easy from a distance, but once you’re in the water, it can surprise you. This spot is known for being one of the most consistent on the island, but that consistency means it can get crowded at times. To get there, most surfers make the walk along the rocky shore under the cliffs from Jardim since it’s closer to the channel.

The waves at Ponta Pequena break over boulders and are best for expert surfers. It works really well on big west swells, especially around low tide. When the conditions are right, you can score extremely long rides with a nice inside barrel section that demands speed. The optimal swell direction is from the west, but it also handles southwest and north swells pretty well. It can handle swell sizes around 1.2 meters (4 ft), and the waves break to the right. It’s worth noting that the best wind direction is northeast, so keep an eye on the wind when planning your session.

While the paddle out is less daunting thanks to a defined channel, be prepared for the long walk under the cliffs, which can be prone to landslides and falling rocks, so stay aware of your surroundings. The tide plays a role too; low to mid tides are preferable to catch the best waves. Overall, if you're looking to challenge your skills, Ponta Pequena is definitely worth checking out.
