Popoyo Outer Reef is a solid surf spot located about a quarter-mile from the much friendlier Popoyo Main Reef. It's known for its intense waves, making it an exclusive destination for experienced surfers. The location can be a bit sketchy, as it only really works on mid to high tide due to the shallow reef at low tide. If you're looking for a thrill, this is the place, but it’s not for the faint of heart.
The surf here can get pretty big, ranging from 2 to 4X overhead, and can handle swell sizes from 2.4 meters to 7.6 meters. The best swell directions are from the South, South-Southwest, and Southwest, with the ideal conditions being calm to light offshore winds from the East to Northeast. The wave types you'll encounter include reef and slab, breaking over a rocky reef. The take-off can be challenging, especially with strong offshore winds, but once you're in, it’s not too hard to paddle around.
Accessing Popoyo Outer Reef is straightforward; just park at the very south end of the road leading into Popoyo and walk across the rivermouth. You can also come by boat. Expect minimal crowds—sometimes just a few surfers when the conditions are on. While it stands out as one of the best big-wave spots in Central America, always keep an eye on the locals like Manuel, J.J., and Lance, who dominate the lineup when it gets heavy.
