Port Mansfield Jetties is located on the Texas coast, about 80 miles south of Corpus Christi, along a narrow barrier island. To get there, you’ll need a four-wheel drive vehicle to navigate over 65 miles of sandy beach. The area is relatively isolated, which means you can often avoid the crowds that typically gather at more popular surf spots. The jetties play a major role in creating some lined-up waves, making it worth the trip for experienced surfers looking for an uncrowded session.
The surf at Port Mansfield typically works best with Southeast swell, but it can also handle swells from the Northeast and South. Wave heights generally range from about 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters). You can expect both lefts and rights to break over a sandy bottom. The optimal wind direction is Northwest, and it can work during low, mid, or high tides. With the jetties breaking up the South winds, surfers often find decent conditions even when the wind picks up. It’s one of the easier paddles in Texas, but be prepared for powerful waves and rips.
Due to its remote access, the vibe at Port Mansfield is usually laid-back and friendly, with a crowd factor that's often empty. The best seasons for surfing here are late summer to fall and late winter to mid-spring. Just keep in mind that while the jetties protect from heavy winds, you’ll still encounter the natural challenges of surfing in an isolated area. It’s a great place to bring your shortboard, funboard, longboard, or fish, but make sure you’re up for the challenge.
