Surf: Big SW swells can create Kirra-like grinding rights off the sandbank at Pouto on a low, incoming tide, but it’s rare. Directions: Pouto is located just inside the mouth of Kaipara Harbour of the north side, south of Dargaville on the west coast of Northland. From Whangarei head west on Maunu Road, State Highway 14, out of Whangarei. Continue straight onto State Highway 12 into Dargaville. Go through Dargaville on Jervois Street, onto River Road, heading south out of Dargaville, and onto Pouto Road. Continue onto Norton Street, then right onto West Coast Road and left onto Pouto Road. Continue all the way down to the end of Pouto Road. From here its a short walk along the beach to the break. Environment: Being deep inside the mouth of the massive Kaipara Harbour means rips are strong. Around the corner on the ruler-edged beach up to Dargaville sees small swell, NE wind possibilities best accessed at Bayly's Beach.
