Pozo Verde is a small bay located about 80km (50mi) north of Antofagasta. It’s a bit off the beaten path, and while the drive can feel long, it’s a nice spot for surfers looking for something different. The surf here can be found on both sides of the bay, giving you the chance to catch some waves no matter how the swell is coming in. Just keep in mind that it can get a little crowded at times, especially in the summer when the smaller swells attract more surfers.
The surf tends to work best with south-west swells, although you can also catch rides with south and north-west swells. The waves can get pretty decent around 6ft (2m), but Pozo Verde can handle sizes down to 4ft (1.2m) too. You’ll find both left and right point waves breaking over uneven reef, which adds a bit of challenge. If you're an intermediate surfer, you'll fit right in here. For the best experience, an east wind is preferred, and you can surf at any tide—low, mid, or high.
As for the vibe, just be ready for a mix of locals and traveling surfers. Given that it can be a bit isolated, it’s a good spot to find some peace and enjoy the waves. Remember to check the swells before you go and see if the timing works out with your surf plan!
