Rio Chico surf guide

Rio Chico is a lesser-known surf spot that offers a unique experience for surfers looking for something a bit different. This place is not usually packed, which is a nice change from some of the more crowded beaches. It’s a private beach, and there's a fee to park and surf at the hotel, but many find that it keeps too many people away, allowing for a more relaxed session.

The surf at Rio Chico usually consists of long, consistent lefts that wrap around a rocky shelf. This leads to steep walls that invite high-energy turns. The best conditions are when the swell is coming from the Southwest, but it can also handle NorthWest swells. It works best with swell sizes around 3 feet (about 1 meter) and tends to be better at lower tides. East winds are preferred here, making for cleaner waves if the wind cooperates. Overall, this spot is great for intermediates and up, but it can be tricky depending on the tides and swells.

There are decent beach breaks further south at Las Tunas and Ayambe, so if Rio Chico isn’t firing, you can always check those spots out. Just keep in mind the local conditions – they can change quickly! Enjoy your time at the beach and make the most out of your session here.
