Scarista is a long drive from Stornaway, located on a NW-facing crescent beach that provides a nice spot for surfing. This beach is pretty isolated and gives surfers a sense of solitude while hitting the waves. Even though it’s a bit more sheltered from the wind in the southern corner, it can still pick up some size on the right days.
The surf here is known to work best with a SouthWest swell, but it can also handle NorthWest swells. It breaks over sand, creating beach waves that can offer options for both left and right rides. The ideal swell sizes for Scarista range from 2ft (about 0.6 meters) and up. The conditions are generally good at low to mid tides, but it can also serve up some fun waves during high tide. This spot is suitable for beginners, making it a decent choice for those just starting out.
While you’re out there, keep in mind that on bigger days, there can be some rips that develop. It's a good idea to be aware of your surroundings and to check the conditions before jumping in. The beach itself makes for a scenic backdrop, perfect for a chill surf session.
