Shit Bay, also known as La Bahia, is a well-exposed surf spot that caters mostly to experienced surfers. It gets its name from a history tied to the American military, where sewage was dumped back in the '50s. The spot can be tricky to hit just right, as it doesn’t work often. When it does come alive, it tends to draw a crowd, particularly when conditions are on point. Accessing Shit Bay is easiest by boat, but if you prefer to walk, just be sure to go around the rocks at low tide for a safer trek.
The waves at Shit Bay generally break left over an uneven reef, making it a spot primarily suited for expert surfers only. It handles swell sizes starting at 2 feet (0.6 meters) and works best with northwest swells. While it can pick up some south or southwest swells, those smaller ones often miss the bay. For the best conditions, aim for south winds and any tide height, whether low, mid, or high. Just be prepared for the chance of a crowded lineup when it’s firing.
Keep in mind that since the spot isn’t super consistent, it might take some patience to catch it at its best. If you’re looking for something more relaxed or less crowded, consider waiting for those moderate NW swells. Just remember to check the conditions before heading out, as Shit Bay can be quite challenging.
