The Ranch – Government Point surf guide

The Ranch – Government Point is part of a 14-mile stretch of mostly private coastline that runs from Point Conception to Gaviota. This area is known for its inconsistent yet quality surf spots. Government Point, along with other nearby spots like Cojo, Perkos, and Razorblades, offers a variety of waves but can be tricky to access. Most of the coastline is off-limits to public access, making this area more suitable for locals or those with permission to be there.

This surf spot is best for those looking to ride point breaks with waves that mainly break to the right. The optimal swell direction is from the south, but it can also handle swells coming from the northwest. It works well with swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can be surfed at various tide heights – low, mid, or high. If you’re aiming for a good session, the best wind direction is from the north. Though the surf can be inconsistent, when it’s good, it can be a sweet spot for a solid ride.

Since access is quite restricted, if you're not familiar with the spot or don't have a way to get there, it may be tough to reach. You can usually only get in by boat or if you know someone with property on Hollister Ranch. The area is not meant for the casual surf tourist, and locals are known to guard their turf closely. Be sure to prepare well if you decide to venture into this challenging and unique surf zone.
