Wassaw Island/South End surf guide

Wassaw Island/South End is a pretty laid-back surf spot located along a wide-open stretch of beachbreak that spans several miles. Access is only by boat or kayak, so it's not the easiest spot to get to. This means you won’t find big crowds out here, which can be a plus if you’re looking for some solitude in your surfing. The area tends to be clean but can often be cloudy, making it feel a bit isolated.

This stretch handles easterly swells, especially tropical ones, and can produce waves that range from around 1 to 2 meters (3 to 6 feet). The best times to catch waves are during mid to high tides. You can get both right and left breaks over a sandy bottom, making it suitable for surfers of all skill levels, from beginners to experts. For wind, WNW, NW, and NNW directions work best, and the waves can get fun on their day, though it doesn’t really stand out as a surf destination overall. Be aware of the strong currents near the south end, especially with NE and SW winds, and keep an eye out for local sea creatures.

In terms of equipment, you can ride shortboards, funboards, longboards, fish, or even SUP here depending on your preference. The optimal seasons are late summer, early fall, and early spring. While it may not be the hottest surf spot on everyone’s radar, Wassaw Island/South End can still offer a decent session if you’re looking for something a bit off the beaten path.
