Winchester Bay, located near the mouth of the Umpqua River, features a man-made jetty that stretches about 1000 yards (910 meters) into the Pacific Ocean. This setup creates a convenient wind block and helps the formation of sandbars which are essential for surfing. While it can get busy, especially with locals, the spot generally has a laid-back vibe, and you can find some decent waves here if conditions align.
This spot is best for surfers looking for right-handers that peel off the jetty. It handles a variety of swell sizes, particularly from the Northwest and South, and can manage swells down to 2 feet (0.6 meters). A rip often forms along the jetty, making it easier to get back to the lineup after catching a wave. While it does have nice peaks, the conditions can be tricky since many winter swells come with south winds, making for fewer good days overall. At times, you might find a left peak about 100 yards (90 meters) south when the swell is right, and on good days, the area offers a long stretch of peaks along the beautiful dunes nearby.
It’s worth noting that this spot is suitable for intermediate surfers due to its varied conditions. You’ll want to aim for low to mid tide for the best experience, and the east winds are generally preferred to keep the surf clean. Just keep in mind that while you might enjoy a good session, you may also need to watch out for the local crowd and be aware of the occasional shark hazard.
