Yokohama Bay / Keawa’ula surf guide

Yokohama Bay, also known as Keawa’ula, is a scenic surf spot located on the West Side of Oahu, about fifteen minutes up Farrington Highway. This beach offers a stunning backdrop with its golden sand and lush green mountains that rise to the east. While it's known for its natural beauty, the surf here is the main attraction for many surfers looking to catch some waves.

The surf at Yokohama Bay includes a fast, hollow left-hander that can be tricky due to the steep take-off, breaking over shallow coral. On the other hand, the right-hander just up the beach offers gaping barrels on a solid NW swell, making it a favorite for those looking for a challenge. The conditions can range from head high (around 1.5 meters) to over 10 feet (around 3 meters), and it’s best on medium to high tides. When it’s on, you can expect some incredible waves, but both rights and lefts can be critical with their inside sections. Paddling out is relatively easy, but keep in mind that the currents can kick up and become tricky at times.

Generally, crowds at Yokohama Bay aren't an issue and the vibe is usually pretty mellow. However, it can get packed on weekends or during solid swells, so if you're scoring a good day, be respectful to the locals. The environment is pristine, and whether you're surfing, bodyboarding, or skimboarding, you’ll find that the area handles swells from various directions like NW, SSW, and even SW, with preferable wind conditions coming from the N to NE. Just watch out for the coral heads lurking below the surface; they can cause some damage if you're not careful!
