Aganoa Beach surf guide

Aganoa Beach is a laid-back surf spot located right in front of a family-run surf camp. It's known for its mellow vibe and is a little off the beaten path, making it a good choice for surfers looking to escape the crowds. This beach offers a mix of lefts and rights, appealing to intermediate surfers who want to get away from the more hectic surf zones. The scenery is typical tropical, with beautiful views adding to the overall chill experience of the area.

The surf here features a bowly righthander and fast left with various conditions to navigate. The rights tend to A-frame and can barrel right from take-off, then carve through to a tricky inside section where you have to watch out for some coral heads. The lefts can deliver some nice backdoor barrels, but be aware that there isn’t a defined channel, and the reef can get a bit gnarly. This spot handles swell sizes well starting from 2ft (about 0.6 meters) and is ideal with southeast swell direction. It’s good to note that the strong southeast trades can mess with the waves, while an east wind tends to be better for the conditions.

Aganoa works best at low, mid, and high tides, giving it versatility throughout the day. The rights are best when the swells get a bit bigger, turning it into an expert-level challenge at times, while the lefts are more manageable on smaller swells during low tide. Intermediates will enjoy riding these waves without feeling overwhelmed. If you’re bringing groms along, there’s also an inside left in the lagoon that’s perfect for them to get some practice in a safer environment.
