Bantham surf guide

Bantham is known as South Devon's most famous surf spot. It’s located near the mouth of the River Avon and offers consistent waves thanks to its setup. This beach break has a mix of rights and lefts, making it suitable for different board types, including shortboards, fish, longboards, and even bodyboards. It’s a popular spot that tends to get crowded, especially when the surf is good.

The surf ranges from waist-high (about 1 meter) to overhead (around 2.5 meters), and it works best with swells coming from the Southwest to West-Southwest. The sand bottom helps shape the waves, and you can find both right and left breaks. It’s generally okay for paddling, except when the waves get bigger. The best wind directions are North-North-East, North-East, and East-North-East. In terms of tide, Bantham works at all stages, but low to mid and mid to high tides tend to be the sweet spots for the best sessions. While the spot is known for its consistency, be mindful of rips, especially on dropping tides, if you're still getting the hang of things.

This beach spot can be a bit busy, with competitive vibes from the local crew, so be prepared for some crowd action. You can easily access it by driving through the village and parking behind the beach. Bantham works throughout the year, but the prime conditions usually come in Autumn and Winter, particularly from September to February.
