Overview
Batu Buruk is a sand-bottom beach break in Terengganu and the go-to wave for a fast-growing local surf community. When there's swell, this is where you'll find people out, usually right next to the long jetty that shapes the sandbanks and holds the best waves in the area. The break peels both left and right.
When It Works
The banks come alive at the beginning and end of the monsoon season, when the sand shifts into shape. Sandbags added to slow beach erosion have helped the setup hold together, giving the waves something to work with. It pulls in swell from north to east (N-E), and a northeast (NE) swell is the pick of the bunch. The break is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Expect it to be somewhat inconsistent, so keep an eye on the forecast and jump on it when the sand and swell line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind to clean it up. The bank works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here are friendly enough for beginners finding their feet. The lineup usually stays fairly quiet, so there's room to catch your share when it's on.
Access
You'll find the break in front of the Primula beach resort, with restrooms and a lifeguard on hand. There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking nearby. Check the spot's Facebook page for the latest forecast and conditions before heading down.
