Benone / Magilligan is known for being Ireland’s longest beach, stretching over 10km of mostly empty shoreline. It’s a great place for surfers of all levels, especially beginners looking for less crowded waves. The area has a relaxed vibe, making it a nice spot to chill and enjoy some time in the water.
The surf here is generally beginner-friendly with peaks that work best on a North swell direction. You can expect waves to handle sizes around 2ft (0.6 meters) with both left and right breaks over sand. The beach works well with a South wind and tides that are low, mid, or high, giving you a good variety of conditions to explore. While there can be a longer right hander at the east end, it often gets bigger compared to other sections, so keep your eye on it if you’re chasing a bit of a challenge.
Keep in mind that access to the area can be restricted due to the nearby Army firing range, so it’s a good idea to check ahead if you're planning to surf. There’s free parking available, which makes it easy to get your gear sorted and hit the waves without hassle.
