Cardoso surf guide

Surf: General: Going to the coastal area from Tubarao or Laguna beach, you can have easy access to the terrain road to Santa Marta Cape (Farol de Santa Marta). This is a beautiful place with seven different beaches for surfing. The area can handle a variety of different swells and wind conditions.

Cardoso Beach usually offers good sandbars that can take a wide range of swell size, supporting even large waves up to 12- to 20-foot on the face. Long walls that connect to the inside sections are fairly common when conditions line up. In addition, there's a good channel to make it to the outside on the big days. Big, long lefts and rights can be found here all year.

North of Cardoso you have Prainha do Farol, which breaks on a north or east swell and south wind. After that you will find Galheta, Ipoa and Santa Marta beaches. All of these beaches are mainly sand bottom with a few rocks (Ipoa).

South of Cardoso you have Cigana, Camacho and Jaguaruna beaches. A 4x4 vehicle is advisable for checking all the spots.

Whoever sails from Rio de Janeiro to Santa Catarina is sure to note the existence of the Laje da Jaguaruna or "Stone Field Campo Bom" for nautical chart from the Navy of Brazil (DHN). It is a stone slab submerged a little larger than a football field where the shallow part measures 1.5 meters deep, reaching over 40 meters in some places. It is located 5.3 km from the coast opposite the city of Jaguaruna-SC (Beach Arroio Corrente).

The slab attracts many fishermen, divers and big-wave surfers. The stone supports large waves that can reach 40-foot on the face, making it ideal for tow surfing. Currently the wave of the Laje of Jagua is considered the largest wave of Brazil. Tides: Medium tides Size: Chest high to 3-4X overhead Wind: Calm or offshore from the N. Swell: S, SE Bottom: Sand. Paddling: Long paddle from the beach to the breaks. Spot Rating: Very consistent, usually less crowded, long rides, and holds very big waves (maybe the biggest in the country). Access: Easy Crowds: Crowd Factor: Relatively mellow. Local Vibe: No problem when it's spread out. Environment: Fairly clean for the most part. Hazards: As other spots in SC, between May and June surfing may be prohibited for traditional "Tainha" fishing. Season: Fall and winter are best, but breaks year-round.
