Centinela surf guide

Centinela is a surf spot located near Huaura, accessed via a tricky maze of dirt tracks that can be challenging to navigate. It's a well-known left point break that offers several sections, attracting surfers, especially on weekends. While it's considered a decent spot to surf, it can get crowded. The best conditions usually happen with a west swell, and the waves really shine at low tide.

The surf here can be pretty varied. The outside sections handle larger swells between 4-10 ft (1.2-3 meters), but these are really meant for more experienced surfers due to the rocky bottom and fast rips. If you're looking for something a bit more manageable, the inside sections, which range from 2-7 ft (0.6-2.1 meters), are good for all skill levels, making it suitable for beginners as well. On south swells, only the first section tends to break, but as the swell shifts towards the west and northwest, you’ll find those sandy inside sections walling up for some lengthy rides.

When you're surfing at Centinela, keep an eye out for backwash and cliff bounce at the take-off spot where there are some barely submerged rocks. Rips can be strong, so if you're not familiar with the area, it's wise to be cautious. The cold water is due to wind-driven upwelling, so a wetsuit might be a good idea. If you're planning to camp out, just be mindful that thievery can happen, so keep your gear secure.
