More about Crab Island surfspot

General: In the 20th century, this was the heaviest wave around. Breaks off a small offshore island just off the harbour in (super touristy) Doolin Village. Packs a punch. Tides: Low to mid Size: Head high to triple overhead. Wind: E-SE Swell: SW/ NW Bottom: Rock reef. Paddling: Don't forget shoulder day beforehand; it is further than it looks. Spot Rating: A high performance, powerful right.

Some scary ledges and rewarding pits if you can get them. Keep track of your energy. You'll need it to paddle back in.

Park at the harbour and paddle from the rocks.

Will break all year round. Does not handle wind well so mid winter spotty.

Crowd Factor: This is a regular with locals and a fairly tight takeoff spot. Crowds are a factor. Local Vibe: It’s a staple for locals and they're going to get their waves when it's busy. Smiles and strategy required when it's good and sunny. Often overlooked when it’s a little bigger because of the paddling.

Very clean.

Very sharp limestone reef. Can get shallow. It’s a long way back to the harbour if you get hurt or lose your board.
