Downend Point surf guide

Downend Point is a surf spot that's favored by experts looking for a bit of a challenge. It’s located near Croyde, and you’ll need to park at the headland car park on the Croyde side. From there, you can either paddle round from Croyde or navigate off the rocks from the Saunton side. The spot is known for its shallow and rocky environment, making it less suitable for less experienced surfers.

The surf at Downend Point can be pretty intense. It generally works best with a west swell, but it can also handle swells coming from the southwest and northwest. You’re looking at optimal conditions when the waves are around 4ft (1.2 meters). The reef breaks can produce fast, walling waves that can have barrel sections at low tide, which is when you’ll want to hit the water. However, be aware that it can be a bit sketchy getting in and out, and there’s a strong rip that runs north into the peak, which can turn wide sets against you.

This spot is really for those with expert skills, as the waves can get powerful and unforgiving. For the best experience, aim for a low tide and try to catch it when the winds are coming from the east. If you’re looking for a thrill, Downend Point has got the waves to keep you on your toes.
