Etretat is a surf spot located beneath the iconic rock formation known as ‘l’Aiguille Creuse’ (the hollow needle). It’s known to be a consistent spot for surfers, especially around mid tide. The area can handle both SW swells and NE windchop, making it somewhat versatile. However, it's worth noting that it can get quite crowded, especially on weekends, so you might encounter a bit of localism.
The surf here works best with SW swells, but it can also handle swells coming from the West and NE directions. The spot is capable of accommodating swell sizes starting from 1 ft (about 0.3 meters). Most waves break over rocks and sand, creating both lefts and rights. For the best session, aim for mid tides and catch those SW winds, which are usually cross-offshore. You should feel comfortable here if you're an intermediate surfer, as the waves can vary quite a bit.
Parking can be a challenge, so be prepared for that if you plan to visit. Keep an eye on the waves with the available webcam, and just remember that the inside can get shallow, leading to a fierce shore pound, especially during busy days.
