Frigates surf guide

Frigates is a surf spot located about 22 kilometers (14 miles) from the coast, set in the scenic waters off Yanutha Island. It's known for its impressive size range, catering mostly to experienced surfers looking for powerful waves and thrilling rides. The spot can be reached by boat from nearby surf camps, which are often the base for surfers targeting these waters. While the environment is beautiful, it's essential to keep in mind that it could get a bit crowded when all the surf camp boats are out at once, even though the lengthy lineup helps manage the crowd.

This spot handles swell sizes from as small as 2 feet (0.6 meters) up to some significant heights. The best swell direction is from the southwest, but southeast swells can also work. Frigates is known for its left-breaking waves that can be both thick and hollow, delivering fast barrels, especially in the inside "Bowl" section. Surfers should prepare for a unique experience as the waves can be unpredictable due to the coral reef beneath. Wind conditions are crucial here; east winds are generally preferred, while northeast can be okay outside, and southeast winds typically lead to clean offshore conditions on the inside. High tide helps with wave makeability, but low tide can lead to challenging conditions in some spots. This wave is best suited for expert surfers who can handle its challenges.

Aside from the waves, surfers should be aware of the environment theyโ€™re riding in. There are rips and coral to watch out for, and it's crucial to respect the distance to shore. Frigates has its own unique vibe, and while it can offer some of the best sessions, being prepared and skilled is key to enjoying what it has to offer.
