Gili Trawangan surf guide

Gili Trawangan is the largest of the three Gili Islands located off the coast of Lombok, Indonesia. It's known for its laid-back vibe and beautiful beaches, making it a popular spot for tourists looking to relax. While it's not primarily a surf destination, there are some surfable spots on the island, especially for those willing to explore a bit. Keep in mind that Gili Trawangan is more of a party and chill-out place, so don’t expect to find consistent waves all the time.

The surf here can be a bit tricky. The best waves usually come from the south and southwest, with optimal conditions when the swell is pushing in at around 3ft (about 0.9 meters). Most of the action happens at the fringing reef at the southern tip, which offers fast, slightly hollow right-hand waves. Be aware that the current can be strong, so it's advisable for intermediate surfers to take on this challenge. The best winds come from the northwest, while mid and high tides will give you the best chance of catching a ride.

Gili Trawangan is also often busy with snorkeling tourists, which means it's not always possible to find a clear wave. If you're willing to put in the effort and pick the right conditions, you might snag a decent session. Just remember, it’s more about enjoying the surfing experience rather than expecting epic waves every time you head out.
