Grinders surf guide

Grinders is a surf spot located just beyond South Passage, approximately a 30-minute paddle from Salmon Beach. This spot is popular among more experienced surfers looking for a challenge. The waves here can be quite engaging, but the conditions can change quickly. Be sure to check the tide and swell before heading out, as this spot isn’t one for beginners.

The waves at Grinders are mostly lefts and break over LiveCoral, offering fast, hollow sections that can produce barrel opportunities. The spot handles swell sizes of around 3ft (about 0.9 meters) and works best on a southwest swell, though it can pick up south and northwest swells too. The ideal wind direction is from the east, and the waves can be surfed at low, mid, and high tide, making it quite versatile in terms of conditions. However, be aware that the channel can get quite rippy, so having a boat nearby is a good idea if you're planning to paddle out here.

Since Grinders is better suited for expert surfers, it's a good idea to have some solid experience under your belt before tackling the waves. The spot can get crowded, especially when the conditions are right, so don't be surprised if you find yourself sharing the waves with a few other dedicated surfers. Enjoy your time out there and be mindful of the lineup!
