Grumari surf guide

Grumari is a stunning beach located west of Prainha, surrounded by steep hills and tropical jungle. The spot is known for its consistent waves, making it a great destination for surfers. Despite being about an hour's drive from Ipanema, it still attracts a good number of beachgoers, and on weekends, it can get quite busy. The beach is long, giving surfers ample space to find their own spot, even though access can be a bit lengthy as you pass through the park.

The surf at Grumari is reliable, picking up SSW swells well, and it can handle sizes from 1 meter (3 ft) to 2.5 meters (8 ft). You’ll find both lefts and rights breaking over a sandy bottom, which is nice for those just getting started. Good conditions often show up at low, mid, or high tide, but keep in mind that very low or very high tides can lead to messy closeouts. The crunchy paddle back is easier near the right corner, but if you drift too much towards the middle of the beach, it can become a tougher journey against the waves. The preferred winds from the north help make the surf a bit cleaner.

While the crowd factor is generally lower during the week, it can get more crowded on weekends, especially when the waves are good. The vibe tends to be competitive, especially near the right corner, so it’s best to keep things chill. Grumari is popular among both beginners and those with more experience, making it a versatile spot for surfers wanting to enjoy a day on the water. Autumn and winter are the best seasons to hit this spot, as the waves are usually more consistent then.
