Overview
Iron Steamer sits almost exactly between Emerald Isle and Atlantic Beach, breaking over sand with an old shipwreck on the bottom. It tends to break with a bit more punch than the nearby pier, though it gives up some consistency in the trade. On its day it's a fairly average zone that can turn on under the right conditions, running as both a right and a left. Keep the wreck in mind as you paddle out.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south-southwest through southeast (SSW-SE), and it's storm dependent. Tropical cyclones light it up through late summer and into fall, then frontal activity carries it from late fall through winter into spring, with autumn the standout season. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, roughly chest high to overhead. Consistency isn't its strong suit, so it rewards a bit of patience.
Wind and Tide
Look for offshore wind out of the north-northeast (NNE), with a workable wind window running from northwest to north-northeast (NW-NNE). It breaks best on low to mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
The lineup stays fairly quiet with a somewhat reserved, easygoing feel, and crowds are pretty mellow, especially in the offseason. A solid south swell in summer can make the peak hairier, but most of the year the crowd isn't much of a factor. It suits everyone from beginners through to experts, and the sand-bottom setup handles just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, SUPs, skimboards, and bodyboards.

Parking at Iron Steamer and Memorial Park costs $10 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays throughout the summer.
