J.P. Luby Surf Park surf guide

J.P. Luby Surf Park is located on the border between Port Aransas and Corpus Christi, just north of Fish Pass. Once a popular destination for Texas surfers, the park has seen some decline since a hurricane took out the pier. While it’s not the main go-to spot anymore, it still offers decent waves, especially when the conditions are right. It’s a great place to catch a few rides without feeling like you’re completely overwhelmed by crowds.

The surf here usually runs waist to head high (about 1 to 2.1 meters). You can expect consistent beach breaks that can go left or right, depending on the swell direction. It handles a variety of swells coming from the southeast and easterly directions. Ideal conditions often occur during late summer to fall and late winter to mid-spring. When the sandbars align properly, especially during groundswell or after a front, you can get some hollow waves, which can be fun for all skill levels, from beginners to experts. Keep in mind that you’ll want to watch for strong longshore currents, so drift sessions are common here.

Access to J.P. Luby is pretty easy; just park on the beach and you’re set. It can get a bit packed on land during peak times, but the water is usually manageable. The vibe among locals is generally positive, making it a welcoming place to surf. Spring breakers can add a bit of chaos, so be prepared for some extra company during that season. You’ll find that different board types, like shortboards, funboards, longboards, and fish, all work well depending on wave conditions.
