Lobitos is another one of those perfectly shaped Peruvian points that when the sand fills in the gaps in the rocks, long mechanical peelers will wall and run for a couple of hundred metres minimum. Hot-dog heaven when it's small with lots of lip climbing and floating to link it up, but it's not much of an out and out barrel unless it is big and the sand is in. Works in winter S and summer NW swells with higher tides making the inside steeper section less susceptible to close-outs. Stays pretty clean most of the time in the S winds, but even if it is a bit bumpy, it will usually yield a few fun rides.

General: Lobitos is one of the best waves in Northern Peru. Lobitos the town actually offers more than five different waves, with other spots in walking distance. Lobitos Point is a left point that produces barrel sections and an open face for high-performance surfing. The bottom consists of sand, and rocks if you are surfing the La Frontera section. The wave works best with a SW swell and waves in the five to seven-foot range, but it can handle bigger surf. The best time to surf is low to mid-tide, but it also breaks through the higher tides. The wind is predominantly light offshore in the mornings, but then increases some and turns sideshore for the afternoons. However, the wind will usually swing back offshore before sunset. Best season to score is fall, but Lobitos picks up swell all year round. Tides: Low to mid (incoming). Size: Head high to a couple feet overhead or so. Can handle larger surf too. Wind: S to SE Swell: SW, but South-SSW swell still wrap in. West swells, although rare, also are good, with more vertical lines wrapping on the point and more hollow barrel sections. Bottom: Sand, with some rocks in the La Frontera section. Paddling: Long paddles back up the point. Spot Rating: Good.

Crowd Factor: Light. Local Vibe: Mellow.

Rates highly in the Peru pointbreak league as it has something for all from improvers to experts, who can also head out to the tip and ride the mad barrels of El Hueco. Scores 8/10 for both crowds and consistency, with some heavy vibes in the long line-up where drop-ins are prevalent. Area also has a history of armed robbery on surfers en route to the waves from Talara.
