Long Bay surf guide

Long Bay is a surf spot located in the suburb of Torbay, just north of Devonport on Auckland's north shore. This area features a collection of beaches, with the main highlight being a decent reef at the southern end below Cliff Road. While many of the nearby beaches typically have low-quality waves, there are those rare days when the reef delivers some good surfing when the conditions align.

The best time to surf at Long Bay is when there’s a north-easterly swell. It can handle wave sizes around 2 feet (0.6 meters) and works well with south-west winds. You’ll find wave action that breaks over rocky ledges and sand, offering both lefts and rights. Low to mid tides are preferable here, making it suitable for beginners looking to improve their skills on less challenging waves.

When the swell is on, locals are keen to take advantage of the conditions, so expect some company in the water. It's a good spot to hang out and enjoy a day of surfing, especially if you're just starting out or want to practice without the pressure of bigger waves.
