Long Strand, located near Castlefreke, is a popular beach break that attracts surfers of various skill levels. The beach can get quite packed, especially on weekends with both beginners and locals looking to catch some waves. The spot features a height-restricted car park, so keep that in mind when planning your visit. Access is straightforward via the R598 road, and parking is available at either end or along the roadside behind the dunes.
The surf here can be quite hit or miss. When the conditions align, it can offer fun waves that are best with a southwest swell. The ideal conditions are when the swell sizes hit around 2ft (0.6 meters), breaking over uneven reef and sand. You can expect waves that break left and right, making it suitable for beginner surfers. The best wind direction is northeast, and while it can handle various tide heights, low and mid tides seem to bring more consistent rides. Be prepared for some onshore, messy conditions, particularly when it's windy.
Keep in mind that Long Strand can often be rippy and challenging, especially when the tide is high, which can cause some shore dump. The sandy spots at both ends of the beach often hold better banks, providing more peaks in the middle when the surf is right. As always, respect the surf etiquette and share the waves!
