Ma'alaea Harbor surf guide

Ma'alaea Harbor is one of the more recognized surf spots on Maui, known for its fast and challenging waves. While it might not pull in swells like Lahaina, it still has a reputation for producing some quality surf when the conditions align. Located on the eastern side of Ma'alaea Harbor, reaching the spot is pretty straightforward, making it accessible for surfers looking to catch some action. It's famous for its perfect right-hand tubes, which have attracted many surfers over the years.

The waves here thrive on South to SouthWest swells, with sizes generally ranging from 4 to 7 feet (1.2 to 2.1 meters). Ideal conditions are seen when the wind is calm or offshore, especially from the W to N directions, with NW being optimal. The wave breaks over a combination of lava, rock, and coral, creating a thrilling ride for experienced surfers. Due to the shallow reef beneath and the intensity of the waves when they’re good, Ma'alaea Harbor is mostly suited for expert surfers. However, there are smaller peaks nearby that beginners and intermediates might find more manageable during less powerful swells.

Crowds can vary quite a bit; when the waves are firing, expect an intense lineup, but it tends to be more manageable with smaller swells. The local vibe is generally mellow, although it can heat up when the surf is at its best. Paddling out takes some effort, especially depending on your entry point, as you’ll be navigating long rights and a sizable distance back to the take-off zone. If you’re looking for a spot to try out your shortboard, funboard, or even a fish, Ma'alaea Harbor is definitely worth a visit in the summer months.
