The E coast leads to an average of 13 bites a year around Tamatave, which is a consideration for surfers enjoying the area.

The surf here is best with a southwest swell direction, but it can handle north and southwest swells as well. It works well with wave heights starting from around 2ft (0.6m). Surfers can expect both left and right-breaking waves over uneven reef.
