Mataveri is a surf spot located on the island with a reputation for having the longest wave in the area, reaching up to 800 meters. The wave breaks over boulders, adding some extra challenge to the ride. It generally requires a moderate swell with long periods to work effectively, especially when the swell comes from the west. South-west and north-west swells can also provide decent conditions, but the more west in the swell direction, the better it gets.
This wave is fast and tubular, often larger than it seems at first glance. It breaks to the left and is definitely more suited for experienced surfers. The spot handles swell sizes up to around 5 feet (1.5 meters), and you’ll want to aim for low to mid or even high tide when you’re out there. The preferred wind direction is east, which helps to clean up the wave a bit.
Getting in is not too complicated, as you can jump off a cliff to access the water. However, getting out can be pretty tricky. You’ll have to navigate a barely submerged rack and scale a 6-foot, razor-sharp lava cliff, which is no walk in the park. Make sure you’re comfortable with your skills before heading out here, as this spot is not for the faint-hearted.
