Mavericks is a world-famous surf spot located at Pillar Point, known for its massive and powerful waves. It’s primarily a reef break that attracts expert big-wave surfers looking to challenge themselves against some of the biggest surf conditions on the planet. This spot can get pretty intense, so it’s not for the faint of heart.
The waves at Mavericks typically work best with swells coming from the NorthWest, but it can also handle some West swells. When the swell hits around 12 feet (about 3.6 meters), the surf really starts to roll in. You'll normally find mostly right-hand waves, but those brave enough might catch some lefts too. The wave breaks over boulders, making the take-off incredibly hollow and fast, especially in front of what surfers call “The Boneyard.” Ideal wind directions are from the east, and low to mid tides are preferred for the best conditions.
Getting to Mavericks usually involves a 40-minute paddle from a small beach near the north jetty after parking south of Pillar Point. For those looking for a quicker access point, a boat ride from Princeton Harbor is the way to go. The area is part of the federally protected Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where regulations apply to watercraft, especially during high-surf warnings. Just be aware that it's an expert-only spot due to the wave's size and power.
