Meacom's Pier surf guide

Meacom's Pier, which was once the longest pier in the Gulf, is now a spot that holds some nostalgic value for surfers in the Beaumont and Port Arthur areas. After Hurricane Ike took it down in 2008, surfing here became more about convenience than epic sessions. The beach itself is just a hop from Galveston, making it a decent option for the locals who want to catch a few waves without the long drive to the more popular spots.

The surf at Meacom's Pier can be hit or miss. On the best days, you might find waist to head high (about 1 to 2.5 meters) waves, especially during late summer and fall or late winter to mid-spring. The waves tend to break over sandy bottoms and can ride both left and right. While the sandbars out to sea can provide some fun during good swells from the south and southeast, the extremely wide continental shelf means you’re not likely to find consistent surf. Also, don’t forget that the winds from the northwest to north can help clean up the chop. If it’s good here, it’s probably lighting up elsewhere in Texas.

Getting here is pretty straightforward, and the access is easy, which is a bonus. The crowd factor is low, so you’ll likely find the vibe chill and welcoming, with locals happy to see another surfer around. If you're using a funboard or longboard, this spot accommodates abilities from beginner to expert, but make sure to keep an eye on those longshore currents during your paddling sessions.
