Mid Shore is a surf spot located on the coast near Waipara in North Canterbury. It can be tricky to get to since access involves crossing private farmland, so it's mostly locals who manage to catch it on the few good days. The area offers stunning views and a sense of isolation, perfect for those looking to escape the crowds.
The surf at Mid Shore is primarily a left point break that works best at high tide. The optimal swell direction is from the east, but it can also handle swells from the northeast and south. It breaks over boulders and is ideal for intermediate surfers, particularly when the swell size is around 3 feet (about 1 meter). The best conditions happen with northwest winds and, while it can be a great spot occasionally, it often doesn't live up to the hype.
Since access is challenging, you’ll need to park by the farmhouse and walk across a couple of paddocks down to the beach. Make sure to ask for permission before crossing the farmer's land. The remoteness can make it feel like a hidden gem, but don’t expect to find a bustling surf scene here.
