Middle Beach is a surf spot located between Westport and Bellochantuy Bay. This beach features seasonally shifting sandbars, making it a dynamic location for waves. The access point is past the military base, and there are various entry points along the main road, giving surfers some flexibility in how they reach the water.
The surf here works best with a west swell, but you can also catch some decent waves with north-west swells. It handles swell sizes around 2 ft (0.6 m) comfortably. The waves break over uneven reef and sand, and you'll find both beach break types available. Surfers can expect to ride both left and right waves, depending on where the break is on the day. For the best conditions, east winds are preferred, and it’s good to surf at low, mid, or high tide.
Keep in mind that the beach is quite variable, so checking conditions before heading out is a smart move. Since it’s a less crowded spot, it can be a nice getaway for surfers looking to find a few peaceful rides. Just remember to respect the locals and enjoy the waves!
