Ndao is a small island located just 15 km offshore from the southwestern tip of Timor. It’s part of Indonesia and offers a glimpse into a different local culture with its own language. The island is less frequented by tourists compared to other locations, which gives it a unique vibe. If you’re looking for some relatively untouched surf spots, Ndao might be worth checking out.
The surfing at Ndao can be quite exciting for experienced surfers. The best waves break over a dead coral reef, with optimal swell coming from the west and an ideal range of 3 feet (about 1 meter) and above. You can find fast lefts that tend to hold well, especially with E winds, and if you head further south, there’s a right that works better during glassy conditions or with N winds. The waves come in steep and fast, so you’ll need to be on your game. Cross-currents can add to the challenge, so maneuvering might be tricky at times.
When planning your session, low to high tides are generally preferred, and keep in mind that this spot is suited for expert surfers. You might also spot some reef sharks while you’re out there, so it’s good to stay alert. If you’re into more adventurous surf locations that aren’t packed with surfers, Ndao could be a solid option for your next trip.
