Opoutama surf guide

Opoutama is a long, scenic beach located in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand. It's a spot that caters mainly to beginners and those looking for a more chill surf session. The beach is known for its beautiful surroundings, making it a great place to hang out while enjoying some waves.

The surf here mainly features mellow rollers, perfect for those just starting out. The optimal swell direction is from the south, but it can also pick up some good waves from the southeast and southwest. It handles swell sizes as small as 1ft (about 0.3 meters), which is great for beginners. The waves break over a sandy bottom, providing a gentle ride for surfers. You'll find both lefts and rights, making it a versatile spot for everyone. For the best conditions, it's recommended to surf when the wind is coming from the northeast and at low, mid, or high tide - there's something to catch no matter the tide!

All the basic facilities and a campground are available at the northern end of the beach, making it easy to enjoy a full day of surfing. The local atmosphere is friendly, so don’t hesitate to chat with fellow surfers and share tips about the waves. Just remember it's mostly for beginners, so keep it chill and enjoy the vibe!
