Playa Ballena surf guide

Playa Ballena is a nice spot located in a scenic area that's popular for both its beauty and the surfing options available. It has a laid-back vibe, and while it may not be the most famous surf destination, it offers some good waves and a more relaxed crowd compared to other places. The beach itself is sandy, and it's a great spot to enjoy the sun and surf.

The waves at Playa Ballena are mostly suitable for beginners. They handle swell sizes around 2 feet (about 0.6 meters) pretty well, and they break over sand, which makes it easier for newcomers to paddle out. The optimal swell direction is from the Southwest, but you can also catch some waves from the South and West. Both left and right waves are available, giving surfers a bit of variety. The best conditions usually come with a NorthEast wind, and you can surf during low, mid, or high tides, making it quite flexible for different styles and timings.

In addition to surfing, Playa Ballena is part of the Marino Ballena National Park, which is a great spot for whale watching. From October to March, you might see humpback whales migrating through the area, along with their calves. It’s a nice way to enjoy nature while taking a break from surfing. If you want to explore further, you can head to nearby uncrowded beaches like Piñuela, Ventanas, or Tortuga rivermouth, or even take a boat or walk to the Terraba rivermouth for more surf options.
