Playa Caletas is a lesser-known surf spot that offers a more laid-back vibe compared to some of the busier beaches. It features a beautiful, nearly deserted beach with a large rivermouth that adds to its charm. The area is more suited for those who enjoy some peace while catching waves, but don’t expect it to be a prime tourist spot.
The surf here can be decent, especially when the swell comes from the west. It handles smaller swells pretty well, typically around 1ft (0.3m) but can work with swells from the south and northwest. The sand bottom makes for a beach break that serves both left and right waves. Mid to high tide is when it tends to be best, and a north-east wind will help keep things clean. This spot is ideal for intermediate surfers looking for a bit of variety and a chance to practice without the usual crowd.
Keep in mind that Playa Caletas can have strong rips that make it more suitable for surfers who have a bit more experience. The conditions can change quickly, so it’s always a good idea to stay aware of the surf and tide changes while enjoying your time out on the water.
