Playa Escondida surf guide

Playa Escondida, or 'Hidden Beach,' is a somewhat secluded surf spot that you can only get to by renting a boat from Playa Herradura. It’s a popular place for those looking to catch some waves, but it can get pretty busy with other surfers and boat crews. While it's not the most epic spot out there, it has its own charm, especially if you're looking for some time on the water.

The surf here works best with swells coming from the South and SouthWest, rolling in at about 2 ft. (0.6 m) or more. The waves break over uneven reef and sand, creating both left and right options. The lefts are good for a smooth roll-in that leads into a barreling section, while the rights have a steep take-off but can be a bit easier since they bend back onto the reef. Mid tide is the sweet spot here, as low tide exposes more of the reef and high tide tends to make the waves a bit fat. This spot is more suited for expert surfers, so be prepared for some challenges out there.

Keep in mind, the crowd can make it tricky to get your share of waves, especially at the main peak. Since it's a smaller area, too many surfers can make it feel a bit cramped, so don't expect a wide-open space to showcase your skills.
