Playa Hermosa is a popular surf spot located about two hours from San Jose. It's known for its long stretch of black sand beach that runs for four miles, giving surfers plenty of room to find their own piece of wave. The beach is easily accessible, making it a go-to destination for both locals and tourists. However, because of its proximity to the capital, you can expect crowds, especially when the waves are good. Venturing further south toward Tulin can help you escape the busiest areas.
The surf here is pretty good, particularly for experienced surfers. Playa Hermosa can handle swell sizes from 5ft to 9ft (1.5 to 2.7 meters) and works best with south and southwest swells. You’ll find beach breaks that offer both left and right waves, with a decent amount of power behind them. The wind from the northeast is preferred, and the conditions are best around mid to high tide. Crowds can be intense, particularly from the local surf community and visiting expats, but there are still enough peaks to spread out. When it’s firing, be prepared for some challenging paddling, especially at lower tides, as the rips can be strong.
The vibe in the water is generally laid-back, but respect is key, as local surfers know the sandbars and tide well. If you’re feeling confident, bring along a shortboard, fish, or even a gun for those bigger days. Playa Hermosa can score well on a good day, and while it’s known for its consistency, the conditions do vary, so luck plays a part in getting epic waves.
