Playa Madrono is a lesser-known surf spot that requires a bit of effort to reach. It's about a half-hour walk in, so be prepared for a trek before you hit the waves. The spot is more on the casual side and isn’t always working, but when the conditions align, you’ll find some fun sessions here for those who know what to look for.
The surf at Playa Madrono works best at low to mid tide, especially with a south swell. The optimal swell direction is from the south, but it can also handle southeast and southwest swells. You can expect both left and right waves breaking over sand, with the size working well from 1 ft (0.3 m) to a decent size. North winds are preferable for cleaner conditions, and the beach breaks can produce some fun little waves, making it beginner-friendly on good days.
While Playa Madrono can deliver top-to-bottom tubes at its best, it’s good to note that you shouldn't come here expecting consistent, world-class surf. It's a spot best suited for those who enjoy a bit of adventure and are looking for fun sessions without the crowd, especially when the barrels aren’t up to par. And if things aren’t looking good at Madrono, you always have Raya as a fallback.
