Playa Platanales is located about 30 km north of Ilo, accessible via a dusty coastal track. This secluded beach is situated among a rugged shoreline, providing a unique vibe for surfers. It's a southwest-facing spot, and while it may not be the most crowded place, it's popular with local bodyboarders. You’ll find yourself in an oasis of sand, so make sure to bring all your supplies since it’s pretty isolated out here.
The surf at Playa Platanales varies quite a bit. Depending on the conditions, you can catch some nice barrels or, on smaller swells with onshore winds, you might just have some softer waves that are more suitable for beginners. The optimal swell direction here is from the southwest, but it can handle swells coming from the south and northwest as well, with sizes ranging from around 2 ft (0.6 meters) and up. Waves break over sand, and you can ride them both left and right. For the best experience, aim for low to mid tide, and if the wind is coming from the northeast, you might hit some good sessions.
While the waves can be beginner-friendly, with the right conditions, there’s also the chance for more experienced surfers to snag some quality rides. Just remember, it’s a good idea to check the forecast beforehand to get the best out of your trip here.
