Point Reyes (north) surf guide

Point Reyes (north) offers a unique setting for surfers looking to catch some waves in the Marin County area. The spot features Drakes Estero, which is the largest saltwater lagoon along the coast. At its mouth, there's a wave that can form, but be aware that it's quite fickle and usually best during the springtime and early summer months. The scenery is outstanding with beautiful cliffs and sandy beaches, making it a nice place to spend a day if the surf isn't happening.

The surf here can handle swell sizes ranging from about 0.6 meters to 3 meters (2ft to 10ft). The waves usually break over sand and can come from directions like West, WestNorthWest, NorthWest, and NorthNorthWest. You might get some fun right and left waves as well. The best conditions for riding are typically seen with easterly winds or winds from the EastSouthEast to SouthSouthEast. For the best experience, aim for mid to high tides, especially when the waves are around waist high to overhead. This spot is more suited for intermediate to expert surfers and works well with shortboards and funboards.

Accessing Point Reyes is straightforward. Just take Highway 1 south of Point Reyes Station, head west on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, and then continue to Drakes Beach Road. The crowd factor can vary; if Drakes Estero is firing, expect some surfers out there. On quieter days, you might have the beach to yourself. The local vibe here is pretty chill, with not much presence from locals unless the waves are really on.
